Family Favourite # 2 - Jam Roly Poly

For as long as I can remember when asked what special dinner we would like for our birthday the answer was always - Jam Roly Poly!!  Forget the main course, this was the business.

Jam Roly Poly has always been a family favourite.  Lel, my grandmother, made it before I was born.  Mother has continued the tradition with us and it is now our turn...

Regardless of how many helpings you can get through, no one can ever get enough of it.  Even if there are some leftovers before we go to bed, we all know that there will be none left by the time we awake in the morning.

A word of warning - regardless of how much you enjoy your first two bowls, roly poly sicknes will inevitably be yours once you go back for the third [because regarldess of your inner strength, you will not be able to resist].

And so for the recipe.

You'll need this:

2 cups of self raising flour
1/4 cup of castor sugar
200g butter [use cold butter, not melted]
1 egg
1 cup of milk
1 cup of water
Sugar for dusting

You'll need to do this:

Preheat oven to 200 degrees celcius.

Mix flour, sugar and butter in a mix master.  Then gradually add the milk and egg and beat for another minute or two (you may need to add a little more flour).

Remove mixture from bowl and knead by hand until dough is smooth.  Roll dough into an oval with a rolling pin.

Spread a full jar of strawberry jam (strawberry is the traditional version but you can use whatever type of jam you like, if you are from Australia, you must use Golden Circle brand) onto the dough and then roll into a log.  Place in a suitably sized baking dish, dust with sugar and cover with a cup of warm water (the more water you add the more sauce you will create).

Bake for approximately 35-40 minutes.  Remove from oven and serve with vanilla ice cream.

It goes like this....

And ends up like this....

I know you will enjoy this dish and perhaps it may even become one of your family favourites!

Happy eating!!!

Sam

  4. Do you pour the water into the actual dish or like a bain-marie?

  5. Hi Fifi,

You add the water to the actual dish. This becomes the sauce. The more you add, the more sauce you will make.

I have added another photo which hopefully paints a better picture.

I would love to hear how it goes if you are giving it a try.

  7. Dear Sam I used the exact quantities but had to add about 2 cups of flour extra and still it was very moist and resembled "the blob' Are the quantities correct? Thanks Maggie

  8. Hi Maggie,

As with any recipe that is handed down through our family, the quantities above are a guide. The amount of milk is probably the key. You can use as little or as much as you need to make a dough consistency. Best to add this whilst the beater is going so you can monitor how much you need.

The only other thing I could think of is to make sure you aren’t adding the water to the dough. This needs to be added to the dish at the end, just before placing in the oven.

    Interested in your feedback.

  9. Hi Sam, the roly poly was delicious but a little doughy. I will do as you suggest next time and add the milk to the right consistency rather than tipping all in at once. it is sure to be a winner here too as the flavour was magnificent. Thanks Maggie

  10. Hi Sam made the pudding and it was a winner, as maggie said I will also add milk slowly as beaten instead of all at once.
    Thank you Beverley xxx

  11. Hi Sam,
I've made this recipe twice since you posted it. The first time I added the full cup of milk (agreed with maggie it was a little doughy) the second time I added the milk slowly. The later dish was divine and what was left in the morning was sent to school with the kids for morning tea. What an amazing dish - a winner with the family who, at times, are difficult to please on the dessert front.
Thanks - really enjoying your blog...
